PORTLAND — The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team posted a weekend split in Cascade Collegiate Conference play, as Friday the Mountaineers earned a 71-62 road win over Warner Pacific but lost Saturday at Multnomah, 92-84.

On Friday, EOU avenged an earlier home loss to the Knights behind 29 points and 10 rebounds from Jarek Schetzle as the Mountaineers led nearly the entire night. Schetzle was 12-for-18 from the floor for EOU, which also got a double-double from Landon Jones of 14 points and 10 rebounds, and picked up 11 points from Max McCullough.

Eastern took a 33-26 halftime lead, and opened up as much as a 54-40 lead following a pair of Josh Brown free throws and a 3-point play from Schetzle with 7:39 to play. Warner Pacific pulled as close as 60-53 on Stephon Shaw’s 3-pointer with 4:08 to play, but two Jones free throws and a field goal by McCullough pushed the margin back to 11 with just over two minutes to play and effectively iced the game.

On Saturday, the hot shooting of Multnomah, and in particular Justin Martin, did in the Mountaineers.

The Lions led most of the second half, but baskets by Brandon Porter and Schetzle helped Eastern take an 80-79 lead with 3:59 to play in the game. The lead was short lived, through, as the Mountaineers went more than three minutes without scoring while the Lions went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good.

Eastern trailed just 27-26 in the first half before the Lions went on a 16-5 run to take a 43-31 lead on a 3-pointer by Martin, who finished with 43 points. EOU inched within six on a field goal by McCullough before a 7-0 Lions’ run gave Multnomah a 56-43 lead at the half.

McCullough finished with 24 points to lead four players in double figures for Eastern. Porter finished with 20 points, Schetzle had 13 points and 16 rebounds and Jones added 11 points for the Mountaineers (11-11 overall, 5-8 CCC) who host third-ranked College of Idaho Wednesday.
